Ketchikan Salmon Fishing Action Improves Across Local Hotspots
An honest look at the mid-July marine sport fishery conditions in Ketchikan, Alaska. After a slower start to the summer, overall salmon numbers are steadily building across local waters with much more consistent action on the hook.
Salmon Action Improves Across Key Local Hotspots
Anglers keeping an eye on our regular updates know how fast the tides can turn in Southeast Alaska. Over the last 10 days, Ketchikan salmon fishing has continued to improve across the area as fresh schools move into our local channels.
We are seeing much greater salmon numbers and far more consistent action on the deck. A few key spots have been producing particularly well:
Mountain Point: Action here has been steady and reliable, making it a reliable mark on recent charter trips.
Dall Head & Gravina Island: The fishing around Dall Head and along the backside of Gravina Island has picked up significantly, showing stronger schools pushing through the pass.
While overall numbers of pinks, chums, and early silvers are climbing, King Salmon remain on the inconsistent side. We are still seeing a few beautiful, quality kings showing up here and there, but the main bite right now is driven by the building multi-species run.
Fair Weather and Unforgettable Wildlife Sightings
After a stretch of classic rainy coastal weather, we were treated to a much nicer stretch of weather this past week. A stronger northerly breeze came through, but the clearer skies made for incredible days out on the water.
The wildlife activity has also been top-notch. Along with regular sightings of bald eagles and humpback whales feeding along the currents, we had a truly special Alaskan moment a few days ago when a bear swam right across the channel next to the boat!
