Ketchikan Fishing Reports: July 2026 Salmon Run Update

An honest look at the mid-July marine sport fishery conditions in Southeast Alaska. While the early summer run has kept us on our toes with inconsistent bite windows, a fresh influx of multiple salmon species is beginning to change the game on the water.

Navigating a Slow and Inconsistent Start to the Season

Anglers who follow regular Ketchikan fishing reports know that every single summer on the ocean writes its own unique story. The start of our current 2026 marine salmon season has undeniably been on the slower and more inconsistent side. We have experienced a pattern where the fishing can be highly productive and rewarding one day, only to turn quiet and poor the second day.

The fish have simply been slow coming into our local marine channels this year. This timing can happen when shifting ocean currents, bait fish migrations, and regional weather systems delay the main push of the runs. Rather than a steady, predictable climb in numbers, we have had to work hard, stay flexible, and use every bit of local knowledge on the boat to keep our clients on the bite.

New Salmon Species Arriving as of July 11

The great news is that the tides are officially turning. As of July 11, we are finally starting to see a welcome variety of other salmon species showing up in our local waters to join the resident runs. The variety is picking up significantly, giving our guests a much more dynamic experience on the back deck:

  • Pink Salmon: The pinks are starting to come in steady numbers, providing fast-paced action and great entertainment for everyone on board.

  • Silver (Coho) Salmon: A few early silvers are mixed into the schools, offering a thrilling preview of the heavy late-summer runs to come.

  • Chum Salmon: We are also picking up a few hard-fighting chums to add some excellent weight to the fish boxes.

  • King Salmon: While the main early push has tapered, there are still a few nice king salmon hanging around the local points, especially with the newly liberalized bag limits now in effect.

This diversity of species is exactly what Ketchikan is famous for, and seeing these multi-species schools arrive means the ocean is waking up right on schedule for the mid-summer peak.

Dealing with Sporadic and Rainy Summer Weather

Along with the inconsistent bite, the Southeast Alaska weather has been distinctly sporadic and rainy over the past couple of weeks. Rugged wilderness fishing means dressing for the elements, and our clients have been fantastic at embracing the true, authentic Alaskan experience out on the deck.

While the damp, overcast conditions require good rain gear, they often help to keep the fish shallow and active. We are looking forward to these increasing salmon numbers over the coming weeks, and we are definitely looking forward to some great, clear weather ahead to brighten up our season and smooth out the ocean swells.

Essential Cruise Logistics & Licensing

To ensure a seamless trip for our guests arriving on cruise ships, we coordinate all details directly with your vessel’s arrival times at the Ketchikan cruise ship docks.

Before heading out, please ensure you have purchased and printed your standard Alaska ADF&G sport fishing license online. Anglers under 16 years of age do not require a separate license but will record their harvests on a paper logbook. Following our trip, your entire catch can be professionally processed, custom-packed, and flash-frozen to ship directly to your home through our local partner, Gateway Seafood.
