Ketchikan Fishing Report May 2026: Spring Outlook & Regulations
Welcome to our official Ketchikan fishing report May! The first official Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) sport fishing report for May 2026 is officially out, and the waters around Ketchikan are waking up! As we prep the boat and dial in the gear for our first guests, here is your boots-on-the-deck guide to what’s biting, when the season opens, and what to expect on the water this month.
Ketchikan Fishing Report May: Saltwater King Salmon Outlook
Early-run marine action is starting to build on both the north and south ends of the island. While regional inside waters are currently catch-and-release, the local hatchery terminal areas open for retention very soon:
June 1: Retention opens in Herring Bay (bag limit of 3, any size, nonresident annual limit does not apply), Carroll Inlet, and Thomas Basin (bag limit of 1, 28″ min).
June 8: Mountain Point opens for retention (bag limit of 1, 28″ min).
June 15: The broader Ketchikan area and East Prince of Wales open up for general King Salmon retention.
If you are fishing with us in early June, we will be targeting these productive local terminal runs to get you on the meat!
Ketchikan Fishing Report May: Halibut & The Lingcod Opener
Halibut action is picking up steam as the water begins to warm. A quick reminder for our guided charter guests on the regulatory limits for Area 2C:
Halibut Limits: Guided anglers are on a reverse slot limit of under or equal to 34 inches or greater than or equal to 80 inches. Note that charter retention of halibut is closed on Thursdays starting June 18 through September 10, 2026.
Lingcod Opener (May 16): The wait is almost over! Nonresidents are allowed one fish per day (must be between 30–35 inches, or 55 inches and longer) with an annual limit of two.
Rockfish: Rockfish remain steady year-round. Remember that deepwater release devices are 100% required on board all sport fishing vessels to protect our local demersal shelf species.
Freshwater: Steelhead, Trout & Dolly Varden
If you’re exploring the local road system or nearby creeks, freshwater fishing is in prime transition:
Steelhead: The spring steelhead run has been strong this year in systems like Ward Creek and Naha River. The action will slow down over the coming weeks as these magnificent fish spawn and head back to the salt.
Trout & Dollies: Dolly Varden and trout fishing are heating up fast. These fish are highly active and feeding aggressively on emerging pink and chum salmon fry near lake outlets and creek mouths.
Staying current on these limit changes ensures a smooth day on the water.
