Ketchikan Fishing Report May 2026: The Season Opener
The 2026 Southeast Alaska saltwater season is officially underway, and our latest Ketchikan fishing report May update highlights an incredible milestone on the water. On May 21st, we welcomed our very first charter crew of the year aboard the 4 C’s. It was a truly special day, featuring three generations of a fantastic family fishing togetherโincluding a grandfather, father, and a determined 7-year-old angler ready to experience his first taste of real Alaskan fishing action.
Southeast Alaska made sure to give us a classic, authentic welcome with gray skies, steady rain, steady fog, and a light breeze kicking up on the saltwater. While the weather required us to layer up and work hard for our bites, this fantastic crew never skipped a beat and kept their energy high from the moment we left the dock.
Hard Work Pays Off with 16 Rockfish Released
This particular trip was a 4-hour charter, which meant we needed to locate the fish quickly despite the challenging visibility. We stayed on the move, tracked the structure, and found exactly what we were looking for. By the time the trip wrapped up, the family had successfully caught a total of 16 different rockfish.
As part of our commitment to sustainable sportfishing practices in Southeast Alaska, every single one of those 16 rockfish was safely sent back down to the deep using a specialized rockfish descending device. Using a deep-water release device ensures these fish successfully recompress and swim away healthy, preserving the local Ketchikan fishery for years to come.
True Alaskan Wildlife Action to Finish the Day
To cap off an already memorable family day on the water, the local wildlife decided to put on a spectacular show just as we were finishing up. We had some incredible bald eagle action right next to the boat, with eagles swooping low out of the fog to pick up herring from the surface of the water. It was the perfect, classic Alaskan ending to a rainy day grind.
Seeing a grandson, father, and grandfather sharing the deck, outlasting the elements, and sharing those laughs is exactly what sportfishing in Alaska is all about. This first trip set a phenomenal bar for the rest of the 2026 season.
Looking Ahead: Ketchikan Saltwater Outlook
As we push deeper into the month, we are keeping a close eye on water temperatures and bait movement along the coast. The early bait balls are starting to stack up nicely in the current, which is a fantastic sign for the oncoming summer rush. While the clarity out on the saltwater has been variable with the recent rain and heavy fog, the fish are holding steady near the classic underwater structures, reefs, and drop-offs.
With our first successful charter officially under our belt, the 4 C’s is completely dialed in and the gear is performing flawlessly. June is just around the corner, and the action in the Inside Passage is only going to heat up from here. If you have a trip booked with us coming up, make sure to pack your layers and your rain gear. The Alaskan elements are alive and well right now, but as this three-generation crew proved, the rewards on the deck are absolutely worth the grind.
Staying current on these limit changes ensures a smooth day on the water.
